Why Pair Running with Pilates?

The benefits of running are many, including cardiovascular health, endurance, stress management, time outdoors, the list goes on and on. Similarly, the plethora of benefits that come with practicing Pilates is endless, though some of my favorite benefits are core activation, improved mobility and posture, low impact strength building, and the mediative state of finding the mind-body connection.

To me, the benefits of Running and Pilates are complementary. Cardio bursts and joint-friendly strength exercises, speed and control, steady-state endurance and muscle shaking pushes. As a runner, I’ve found Pilates has transformed my running performance from both a form and strength perspective and incorporating Pilates into my running routine has helped me stay injury free.

Perhaps running hasn’t been your thing, but you’re curious. I believe that moving your body multiple ways helps you avoid plateauing your fitness level and gets you outside of your comfort zone. Not to mention, attempting your typical Pilates sequence immediately after a round of intervals on a treadmill adds a whole new element to the Pilates shake.

Yes, Running and Pilates pair together perfectly, and at the end of the day, it is about choosing to move your body in a way that makes you feel both great and challenged. So let this be your sign to shake things up and try something new! Maybe I’ll see you on the mat and tread soon to give this combo a try.
